Phased Opening Planned as 90% Construction Work Completed
Double-Decker Flyover to Improve Connectivity and Reduce Congestion
Pune, January 7, 2026: Commuters in Pune are set to receive long-awaited relief from traffic congestion as the Shivajinagar–Baner and Pashan sections of the city’s double-decker flyover project near completion. Officials have confirmed that nearly 90% of the construction work has been completed, with phased openings expected by the end of January for the Shivajinagar–Baner stretch and by February for the Pashan section.
The flyover spans approximately 1.76 kilometres, including ramps, and features a 1.3-kilometre main bridge. Key components include a 55-metre steel girder at University Chowk and dedicated ramps providing direct access to Senapati Bapat Road. The lower deck is designed for vehicular traffic, while the upper deck will carry the Metro line, making it one of Pune’s most significant integrated transport projects.
The University Chowk flyover forms an important part of the Man–Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro corridor being executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). According to officials, the project has been designed to ease chronic traffic congestion near Savitribai Phule Pune University and Ganeshkhind Road.
The first phase of the flyover, connecting Aundh and Shivajinagar, was inaugurated on August 20 last year by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and has already improved peak-hour traffic movement. Officials said the remaining work mainly involves completing access ramps, with the Shivajinagar–Baner ramp scheduled to open by late January and the Pashan ramp expected to be operational by the end of February after minor utility adjustments.
Once fully operational, the flyover is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow between Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner, and Pashan, marking a major boost to Pune’s urban mobility infrastructure.
